Quad Space

It was nice to look out of my window today and see seniors and members of the National Honor Society enjoying lunch in this new area outside our entrance. Its a real improvement over seeing just cars right up to the door. The grounds staff did a great job pulling this together, with very little notice, right before the start of school.

If all works out, we would like to improve the space by increasing seating and green spaces in the future.

PEAKS Breakfast

Thanks to all the PEAKS faculty for hosting a welcome back breakfast for all the PEAKS students and their families. The blueberry pancakes were delicious, and Mr. Maleszweski sure can cook a fried egg!

9/16

Thank you to everyone who attended Open House. It was a great way to start the school year. A special thanks to the PTA for the delicious refreshments, the Boosters for an impressive display of BKW wear that is available for purchase and the Board of Education for their willingness to meet with everyone in advance of the evenings start.

The faculty did a great job with their presentations and getting their classrooms ready. Mr. O'Brien even made it to the event on time after leaving his wife and son Liam who was born earlier in the day. Mr. O'Brien's wife must be extremely understanding!

This Friday, the BKW Athletic Department is hosting a fall sports pep rally in the gymnasium. The rally will begin at 1:40 and will be emceed by Mr. Keller. The event has been organized by the cheerleading team and is sure to be a big hit with the students. Later in the evening from 7:00- 10:00 there will be a "Welcome Back" dance for grades 7-12. Admission is $5.00 at the door. Please make sure that you are available to pick up your child at 10:00 outside of the main entrance.

On a final note, congratulations to Jordan Gonyea. Jordan was selected to travel to Washington D.C. as part of the Leadership Training Institute. There is a full story about Jordan's success in the fall edition of the Trail Blazer.

Opening Week

A giant thank you to the faculty, staff and especially the students for a great start to the school year. Things have been very busy with schedule adjustments and making sure everyone gets to the correct class. The week ended on a high note with the annual faculty/ student fashion show.

The faculty wore the "unacceptable attire" while members of the senior class provided examples of what is "acceptable."As always, there was a great deal of laughter and humor. Special thanks to Mrs. Snyder who did a great job as emcee!

I truly hope to see you all at open house on the 15th.

Invitation to Open House and a Job Well Done

Congratulations to Lindsey Hayden and Delaney Martin for participating in the Horizons program at Clarkson University this summer. This is a week long program at the campus. It is geared to girls who have an aptitude and interest in math and science or engineering.
Program Highlights From Clarkson
Although females have an aptitude equal to males in science and mathematics, few choose to pursue careers in these areas. Horizons hopes that encouragement at a pivotal age may make the difference. Horizons is intended to help young women understand the excitement of mathematics thereby encouraging them to choose courses in high school that will lead to college study in math-based disciplines. The Horizons curriculum uses an integrated instructional module for science, engineering and mathematics, and supports these through fun and challenging hands-on projects. The life skills component further enhances the instruction as participants build confidence, personal insight, and team spirit.

This was the first year for Delaney to attend and the second year for Lindsey. We are all proud that you were both accepted and participated in this challenging program.

Open House 2010

I would like to extend this invitation to you for the BKW Middle/ High School Grades 7-12 Open House on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. This is a valuable opportunity for you to meet with your child’s instructors; obtain first hand information about their courses, expectations and goals for the 2009-2010 school year. In addition, it will afford you the opportunity to begin to develop an open dialogue with the faculty that can evolve throughout the year.

As in the past, you will be following a modified schedule. The schedule will be available when you arrive in the lobby of the H.S. auditorium. During the program, the BKW Cheerleading Team will be providing supervised child care and the P.T.A will be serving refreshments.

I look forward to having the opportunity to meet with you at the opening assembly.

Welcome Back

August 20, 2010

Dear Parents, Students, Faculty and Staff:

I hope this letter finds you having had a relaxing and enjoyable summer! It is my hope that you have had time to get outside, enjoy the company of family and friends, as well as recharge for the school year to come. As we prepare for the 2010-2011 school year, I wanted to share with you some of the exciting things which have taken shape since June.

Our new master schedule format has been the result a six month effort by the faculty and administration. As we prepare for the first day of school, the new format looks to deliver several key benefits. Condensing from a thirteen to ten period day will provide us with less traffic in the halls, reduce the number of study halls, and allows for a more effective use of time and resources. Students in the middle grades will have a significant increase in the amount of structured enrichment and remediation during the school day. This is essential as theses are among the most important formative academic years.

This year, we will continue to develop effective means of communication that will share information in a professional and timely manner. One new addition will be the “Principal’s Blog”. This will replace my monthly web letter and allow information about exciting news and events to get out in a more rapid format. It will also allow the opportunity to post questions and feedback in a forum setting. Effective two way communication is essential in any successful school. As the year progresses, faculty and families should be in constant dialogue about the positive and negative happenings in the classroom. Many potential issues can be resolved with proactive communication long before they become problems. This type of contact must not be the exception, but rather the norm in our school.

Our much anticipated building project will be getting underway as well. With its completion, we can look forward to a modern, efficient and well designed facility that our students and community can be proud of for many more years to come. The project engineers are working closely with the school to minimize the impact to our students. In the course of the next two years, there are sure to be some distractions and disruptions. At those times, is very important to remain focused on the end goal and not the short term inconvenience.

In advance of the project, various renovations have already taken place. Our computer lab has undergone a complete renovation which features new hardware and furniture. Also, the Help Room has been transformed into the Tutoring Center. It shares a suite with the NovaNET Lab providing an additional layer of support for students to recover credit and remain in sequence with their classmates. Additionally, twelve classrooms have had LCD projectors installed and only seven classrooms/spaces will require LCD’s in 2011-2012 resulting in 100% coverage in the building. This is very exciting, as the LCD’s are a vital resource for the delivery of curriculum that is both educationally valuable as well as engaging for the learner.

It is extremely important that we all approach this year ready to work together towards our mutual success. In the end, we are all judged by what we accomplish, what we strive to achieve, and what we endeavor to overcome. I would ask that as you begin the year anew, that you do so committed to the growth and development of every aspect of our school community. Be it in the classroom, field of play or inth simple act of preparation for the next day of school, we must all be unwilling to accept failure and see mediocrity as an alarm calling for immediate attention. This is no small task and it cannot be accomplished by one group alone. We must approach every day with a sense of purpose, direction and commitment. At the day’s end, we must quietly reflect on our successes and failures; taking stock and pride in the positives and using the negatives, not as an excuse, but as an opportunity for improvement.

I look forward to seeing you all at Open House on September 15, at 6:30 p.m. if not sooner.
